By D3soccer.com Contributor

It's officially October, which means we are halfway through the regular season! Across the region, teams are starting to battle for regular season conference championships. Let's look across the Midwest and see where the action has been heating up.

Kentucky

Transylvania (8-0-0) stays undefeated with a conference-opening win against Rose-Hulman. Senior midfielder Riley Calhoon scored the lone goal, his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Calhoon is now the HCAC goals and points leader.

Illinois

University of Chicago (10-0-0) sits at the top of UAA while holding the No. 2 spot in the D3soccer.com poll. The Chicago Maroons defeated both Benedictine, 3-1, and Rochester, 4-1, this past week. Chicago is unbeaten in 29-straight regular season games. The Maroons last lost a regular season contest on November 1, 2015 when they fell 0-1 to Carnegie Mellon.

Ohio

Heidelberg (8-0-0) still tops the OAC and remains undefeated this week. The Student Princes are now ranked at No. 25. They shut out Manchester, 1-0, and defeated Muskingum, 2-1 in the conference opener.

Ohio Northern (8-2-1) continues to bounce back, winning their fifth straight game this week. They shut out Anderson and Mount Union. Senior J.J. Fortner is tied for second in the OAC with seven goals.

John Carroll (9-0-1) remains undefeated entering October for the second time in the program's history. The Blue Streaks shut out Fredonia State, 2-0, to wrap up the non-conference games. The reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Champions showed their dominance in the OAC opener and overcame Wilmington, 4-2.

Tennessee

Maryville (Tenn.) (9-1-0) went back to work and picked up three wins this week against BereaLaGrange, and Centre after their first loss of the season. They managed to shut out LaGrange, 6-0, and Centre, 2-0. The Scots are sitting in first in the USA South, West Division.

The next few weeks are crucial as these games dictate the teams' paths to postseason.
