CNU men picked in USA South
Christopher Newport University, under the direction of 15-year Head Coach Steve Shaw, was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer title in 2010. Last fall, the Captains captured the program's second consecutive USA South Regular Season Championship and their first-ever Conference Tournament crown. Additionally, CNU reached the NCAA national quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.
CNU received six of seven first place votes (36 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
The winners of five USA South Regular Season Championships, N.C. Wesleyan College, finished a second in the balloting with 31 points and the final first place vote. Averett University placed third in the poll with 26 points while Methodist University followed in fourth with 21 points. Greensboro College and Shenandoah University shared fifth place with 13 points each while Ferrum College rounded out the poll with seven points.
The men's soccer regular season gets underway on Wednesday, September 1 as six of the Conference's seven teams are in action.
The USA South Athletic Conference Tournament will once again head to Martinsville, Virginia as the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority will host the 2010 Men's and Women's Soccer semifinals and finals. The contests will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia on November 5 and 6. This will be the second of a two-year commitment in Martinsville.
