Knox hires Edwards as new men's head coach

More news about: Knox men's team

A coach that assisted two successful college soccer programs in the northeastern United States is the new head men’s soccer coach at Knox College.

Knox athletic director Chad Eisele has announced the hiring of Matt Edwards to lead the Prairie Fire.  Edwards most recently served as an assistant coach in 2011 at Amherst College in Massachusetts.  He was the associate head coach at Springfield College in Massachusetts for four years prior to joining the coaching staff at Amherst.  Edwards replaces the outgoing Knox alumnus ('94), Lucas Robinson.

While at Springfield, Edwards helped lead the Pride to a 12-8-1 record and an appearance in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals in 2010.  Amherst also enjoyed success with Edwards on the coaching staff, compiling a 16-2-2 record.  The Lord Jeffs won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title and advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16.

Eisele said Edwards comes from one of the strongest NCAA Division III men’s soccer programs in the country.  Edwards said he believes recruiting, which he was heavily involved in at Amherst, will be one of his strengths at Knox.  “His international connections will be a strong help with recruiting,” Eisele said.

"I am delighted to accept the head men's soccer position at Knox and would like to thank Chad Eisele for the opportunity to lead the program forward,” Edwards said. “The energy and enthusiasm in the athletic department was evident throughout the interview process and I am very excited to join the Knox College community"

Before coaching at Springfield, Edwards was an academy coach at the Southampton Football Club in England.

He received a bachelor’s degree in sports science with a concentration in coaching science from University College Chichester in 2005.  He earned an M.A. in advanced level coaching from Springfield College in 2009.

Edwards will begin his new full-time position at Knox College by April 1.
