A glimpse of Saturday

The men’s side of the scoreboard saw a few unexpected results on Saturday night while several double overtime games highlighted the action on the women’s side. Here’s a quick look around the country at the highlights from a busy Saturday.

Stevens lost its second 1-0 match of the young season after falling to NYU. Stevens was outshot 19-7 on the night and had a chance to even the score in the final minute but couldn’t get a shot past NYU keeper Jonas Poster. The Violets got their goal on a one-touch from Paolo Luciano off a free kick from Tino Kardasiss.
Whitworth won a high profile battle over Wheaton (Ill.) in the final match of the Whitworth Soccer Classic. The Pirates broke a scoreless tie in the 34th minute with a goal by Mike Chavez. The goal was the first allowed by Thunder keeper Ryan Seager.
Carnegie Mellon rebounded from a loss on Friday night to knock off Ohio Northern on the road on Saturday. The Tartans took advantage of an early second half goal to take a 3-2 lead that became the final score.
Dominican couldn’t carry over the momentum from their victory over Calvin on Friday night and fell to Hope 2-1 in 2OT on Saturday night. Cameron Dice scored on a header in the 102nd minute to give the Flying Dutchmen the victory.
In women's action, William Smith couldn’t knock off the Falcons and avenge last year’s National Semifinal loss to Messiah but they were able to play to a draw. Messiah senior Alex Brandt was denied on a penalty kick in the sixth minute and William Smith scored early on a goal by Renee Jensen. Messiah’s Alicia Frey came up with the equalizer for the Falcons and the 1-1 score stood as the final. The game included an hour and forty minute rain delay.
Ithaca survived a scare from Scranton with a goal in the 105th minute by senior Rachel Palladino to defeat the Royals 3-2. The game also featured a pair of severe weather delays.
St. Lawrence and Cortland State battled to a scoreless draw in the third double overtime game of the night.
Illinois Wesleyan surprisingly fell to 0-3 on the season with a 1-0 loss to Hope.
In other CCIW action, Wheaton and Augustana both completed 2-0 weekends at the Whitworth Soccer Classic. Wheaton knocked off Puget Sound 2-1 on a pair of goals from Leah DeMoss. The Vikings defeated Whitworth by the same score.
