2012 champ OWU falls, Calvin overcome by DePauw
Sophomore Natalie Lechner had a goal in
UW-Whitewater's NCAA first-round win.
NCAA first round action kicked off on Friday with Dominican and Wheaton (Ill.) hosting men's pods and Loras and Wheaton hosting women's pods. It was a day when the 2011 men's champion and the 2011 runner-up both fell in the first round.
In the Wheaton men's pod, No. 21 Ohio Wesleyan scored first against Centre, but a scrappy Colonel side fought back to tie the match and then shock the defending national champions in the second overtime, winning 2-1 (photos). The result guarantees a new national champion for the 2012 season. Ryan Garvey scored the winning goal, his second of the match. Senior Kit North scored the Bishop goal late in the first half.
In the Loras women's pod, No. 20 Loras fought St. Scholastica through a scoreless first half, but in the second, the Duhawks scored twice to take the first round match 2-0. Freshman Katie Truesdale scored the game winner in the 65th minute, heading in a corner kick from senior Hillary Wilson.
In the other match at Loras, sophomore Paige Capal scored the game winner in overtime for Calvin, moving the Knights past No. 13 Aurora 1-0. The match ended in a scoreless draw, and it was only one minute into the overtime period that Capel ended the match. Calvin will face Loras in the second round on Saturday evening at 5:00 pm.
At Dominican, the Stars fell behind to Webster 1-0 early on a goal by Clint Carder, but fought back in the second, equalizing on a PK in the 69th minute, and then added two more goals in route to a 3-1 win. Senior Ryan Roberts had the game winning goal in the 71st minute off the assist from junior Trent Miller.
In the other match, No. 24 DePauw blanked Calvin 3-0 and will face Dominican on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm. Alieu Musa scored the game winner just 31 seconds into the match for the Tigers.
In the Wheaton women's pod, Wheaton earned a spot in the second round by way of their 4-0 win over Webster (photos). And later, UW-Whitewater cruised past Wittenberg 4-0, and will face Wheaton for a second round match on Saturday at 5:00 pm. The Warhawks will be looking to make amends for last season's 4-0 NCAA Quarterfinal loss to the Thunder at Joe Bean stadium.
