Redlands' Richie Marquez taken in 3rd Round of MLS SuperDraft
With the sixth pick of the third round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, Philadelphia Union selected Redlands' defender Richie Marquez. When the draft, which began with the first two rounds on Thursday, January 16, resumed Tuesday afternoon, the D3soccer.com All-American did not have to wait long to find out if his name would be called. The selections being made via conference call moved at a rapid pace and the sixth player drafted on the day and 44th overall was Marquez.
The 2013 SCIAC Player of the Year and D3soccer.com Third Team All-American impressed at the MLS Combine the previous week, excelling in the physically tests and holding his own in game action with and against some of the best graduating talent from Division I. Marquez was the only Division III product among the 76 players selected in the draft. He was one of two Division III players (along with Messiah's Josh Wood) to participate in the MLS Combine and one of seven Division III players to have been made eligibile for the draft by interested MLS teams.
