Strong Second Half Lifts No. 25 Randolph Men's Soccer Past Bridgewater College 3-0
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's soccer team, coming off their first-ever win over a nationally ranked team and its first-ever national ranking themselves, poured in three second half goals to defeat Bridgewater College 3-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener from WildCat Stadium.
Randolph (8-0/1-0 ODAC), which was ranked 25th overall by D3soccer.com Tuesday afternoon, came out and controlled the tempo early, taking six of the game's first seven shots. During that stretch, senior Timmy Songer (Windsor, VA/Windsor) clanged the post with a shot from right in front of the net.
Bridgewater (3-5/0-2 ODAC) rallied taking the game's three attempts on net, forcing Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) to make two saves. Shortly after that spurt, Songer again nailed the post, leaving the WildCats without a goal going into halftime.
After halftime, Randolph turned on its offense, which was ranked as the fifth-best in Division III. The WildCats outshot the Eagles 14-2 in the second half, displaying great skill and teamwork through the period. Randolph jumped out on top in the 53rd minute, as sophomore Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) netted his ODAC leading seventh goal of the season with help from Jacob Hood (New Market, MD/Linganore).
Sindle added to his point total just over ten minutes later, as he set up Joe Skaja (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) for his second goal of the season. Sophomore Tristan Luxner (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) put a cap on the game's scoring at 66:22, as he blasted a shot from 18 yards out with his right foot past the Eagle keeper. That goal was also set up by Sindle, which was his fifth helper of the season.
That was plenty for Smith, who posted his fourth win of the season, combining with first-year CJ Stevens (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) for the squad's fifth shutout of the season. Sophomore back John Adams (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) and his defending teammates were again stellar, surrendering just two corner kicks.
The WildCats outshot Bridgewater 24-8 on the evening, while holding an 8-2 edge in the corner kick department. Smith finished with four saves for Randolph, while Travis Morris chalked up six saves and gave up all three goals.
Randolph will continue ODAC play this weekend, as it travels to Harrisonburg, VA for a 7 p.m. contest with the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University on the EMU Turf Field Saturday night.
