ROWAN DOWNS NJCU, 3-2, IN CONFERENCE ACTION, DESPITE ASSIBU'S TWO STRIKES

GLASSBORO, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior forward AMANFO ASSIBU (Bronx, NY/Sheepshead Bay) scored his first two goals and four points as a Gothic Knight, including a 74th minute marker than made it a one-goal game, but New Jersey City University was unable to net the equalizer and fell to Rowan University, 3-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Rowan Soccer Field.

Assibu, playing in just his sixth game in an NJCU uniform, initially put the Knights in front early in the first half before the Profs scored three consecutive goals for a 3-1 halftime cushion.

Senior forward WALTER AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) and senior midfielder TOM KRYCHKOWSKI (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) each provided one assist. . The assist for Avans was his team-best fifth of the year and 79th point of his career—one shy of Edison Bilbao for fourth place in school history (80 points, 2005-08).

Rowan received single goals from freshman midfielder Shane Kohler (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional), freshman forward Christian Fountain (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford), and junior midfielder Shane Dooley (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township).

Junior forward Julian Berrios (Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy), junior midfielder Andrew Brawner (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and junior defender Jared Mangone (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) contributed assists for the Profs.

Senior keeper MANNY LOJO (Clark, NJ/Union Catholic) made six saves for NJCU. Sophomore keeper Ryan Gill (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) had three stops for the Profs.

NJCU gained a 1-0 lead just 5:19 into the game as Avans slipped a pass to Assibu for a breakaway in front of the net, before finishing a shot into the lower right side.

Kohler netted his third goal of the season less than five minutes later, tying it at the 10:09 mark. He received a cross from Berrios before depositing a one-timer into the lower left corner.

Rowan gained a 2-1 margin in the 23rd minute and a 3-1 advantage in the 29th minute. At 22:57, Brawner fed Fountain who faked out Lojo in a 1-on-1 in the box, scoring his fifth goal of the year into the open net. At the 28:38 mark, Mangone took a free kick that set up Dooley for a shot into the upper left corner for his first goal of the year.

NJCU made it a one-goal game at the 73:15 mark as Krychkowski made a cross into the box where Assibu one-timed a shot into the left corner. The helper was Krychkowski's second of the season.

Lojo made a great save on a Dooley header with seven minutes left to keep it a one-goal game. Assibu had an 84th minute shot blocked as the Knights attempted to rally late but NJCU was unable to get off another shot in the final minutes. Eight of NJCU's 12 shots came in the second half.

NJCU is back in action on Monday, October 10 at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game at John Jay College in Maspeth, NY.
