BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Saimir Zepaj's (Peabody, Mass.) goal 9:16 into overtime lifted Salem State to a 1-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Zepaj took a feed from fellow junior Eryk Fernandez (Nipomo, Calif.) and broke in from the left side for his fifth marker of the year that gave the visiting Vikings (9-5-1, 6-0 MASCAC) at least a share of the conference regular season crown with one match remaining in regular season play. Senior Scott Hall (Waltham, Mass.) picked up his eighth victory of the season with six saves in net for Salem State, which had all four shots in the extra session.
Senior Patrick Slaney (Northbridge, Mass.) also made six stops in net in the setback for the host Buccaneers (6-7-1, 1-4-1 MASCAC), including a point blank save on a Fernandez shot in the opening minute of overtime. Both teams had 15 shots in the contest, with the Vikings holding a 5-4 edge in corners for the day.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Boston in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Salem State heads to Gorham, Maine on Tuesday afternoon to take on Southern Maine in a non-league match that begins at 4:00 p.m.
