Eagles Net First Conference Win Against Farmington
Bangor, ME - Husson University Soccer notched its first NAC victory Saturday evening at Boucher field over the University of Maine Farmington, 2-1.
The Eagles dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Beavers by a 5-1 margin. Husson scored their first goal of the evening not five minutes into the match as Alain Tuyishime found Jimmy Fitzpatrick on the left side. Fitzpatrick cut back to his right and fed to the box, finding Kyle Hargreaves at the top of the box. Hargreaves collected beautifully and placed the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles outshot UMF 12-3 in the first half, but had just the one goal to show for it, leading at the end of the first by the same score of 1-0.
In the 80th minute Husson would add their second goal on the night when Jeremy Beers found a pass from Josh Puckett right in the middle of the box and and touched a ball past the keeper for the 2-0 advantage.
Farmington fought back and added a late goal to make things interesting, however. Just eight minutes after the Beers goal, Ryan Fairbanks found a ball in front of the net off an Eagle defensive miscue and tucked it in the back of the net to cut the Husson lead to 2-1. That would be the final opportunity on the night for Farmington as the Eagles kept them at bay for the final two minutes of the match.
Along with the Beers and Hargreaves goals, Husson was led by Joshua Bean who tallied five total shots, three of which on net. Jimmy Fitzpatrick had four total shots and two on net with Hargreaves tallying four as well, with the one on net for a goal.
"It was a good performance," head coach Jeff Gettler said after the game. "It's too bad we gave up a late goal on a defensive miscue, but the first half we played really well and just didn't finish. In the second half I thought that actually going against the wind made us settle down and actually play better soccer. Overall I was very happy with everyone and getting three points for our first win, it's a great day."
Derek Reilly gets the loss for UMF and Brian Potter earns the win for the Eagles.
Husson travels to Vermont next weekend for their next games on the schedule as they're set to take on Green Mountain Saturday at 1:00pm and Castleton Sunday at 12 noon.
