Oglethorpe's Hoeft, Marquez Named to National Soccer Coaches' Scholar All-South Region Team
Junior defender Josh Hoeft and junior midfielder Erik Marquez of the Oglethorpe men's soccer team added to the squad's postseason awards bounty this week, as they both took home Scholar All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). It marks the first such honor for both players and the second year in a row that at least one member of the Stormy Petrels has earned NSCAA Scholar All-Region accolades.
Marquez, who hails from Sandy, Utah, holds a 3.98 cumulative GPA while majoring in dual-degree engineering and minoring in mathematics. Back in the spring, he earned the Male Scholarly Petrel Award as the Oglethorpe student-athlete with the highest GPA over the course of the 2015-16 academic year (a perfect 4.0). He's earned a spot on Oglethorpe's Dean's List four times and on the SAA Academic Honor Roll twice. He also was the squad's honoree for the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team in 2015 and 2016.
Hoeft currently holds a 3.65 cumulative GPA with a dual-degree engineering major. He earned All-SAA Second Team honors this year, marking his first career all-conference accolade. The Petrel fullback and Suwanee native really came into his own over the course of the 2016 season and was an essential part of the Oglethorpe attack up the flanks. He recorded 4 assists on the year, putting him in a tie for sixth on the conference leaderboard. Hoeft is a 2-time SAA Academic Honor Roll designee and has earned a spot on the Dean's List three times.
Both players served essential roles in helping the Petrels to back-to-back SAA regular season titles in 2015 and 2016. Over the two years combined, the team has gone an impressive 11-1-2 in SAA play.
"I am so very proud of both these guys!" said Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin. "They are integral parts of a team that has consistently been the best in our league the last few years, and have maintained an elite level of commitment to our sport and our team. The fact that they can achieve the same level of excellence at a very challenging academic institution like Oglethorpe speaks volumes about who they are as people. They will both be very successful in life when their soccer and academic careers are completed."
Hoeft and Marquez become the third Petrels to earn NSCAA Scholar All-South Region honors in the last two years, and the fourth in the last four years. Forward Nick Muntean took the honor in 2015 and forward Nick Williamson did so in 2013.
