FINAL: WPI 4, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Brendan Nemes's (Kingston, Mass.) penalty kick conversion in the 80th minute proved to be the game-winner as WPI scored three goals in the final 10:20 of action to notch a 4-1 non-league college men's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Engineers (3-1) overcame an early 1-0 deficit after junior Brendan Gawron's (Braintree, Mass.) successful penalty kick 10:36 into the contest had given the host Buccaneers (1-2) the lead, as senior Anthony Vigliotta (Beverly, Mass.) evened matters in the 38th minute on a feed from sophomore Jackson Conroy (Reading, Mass.). The match remained deadlock until Nemes netted the deciding tally after a foul on the left side of the penalty area, and WPI iced its triumph with two goals in a 95 second span late in the match from junior Jake Steinberg (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Luke Reiniger (Rowley, Mass.), the latter coming on the third penalty kick conversion of the day with 1:26 remaining.
Reiniger assisted on Steinberg's marker to finish with three points for the Engineers, as senior Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) earned his third win of the young season with a four-save effort. Senior Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) made 13 stops in goal in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as WPI outshot the Buccaneers by a 23-8 margin overall (17-5 on goal) and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Nichols in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while WPI heads to Waltham, Mass. to take on fourth-ranked Brandeis in a non-league match on Wednesday evening that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
