Warhawks Come From Behind to Claim Hawk Cup
After falling behind 2-0 after 18 minutes of play, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team came from behind to defeat Loras College 4-3 Thursday evening in Whitewater and reclaim the Hawk Cup.
This is the 10th installment of the Hawk Cup, a match played annually between the Warhawks and Duhawks. Last season Loras topped UW-W 3-0.
The win is the third in a row for the Warhawks, 10-5-1, and ninth in their last eleven matches.
Things looked grim early. Loras scored just 21 seconds into the match and added one more 17 and a half minutes later.
In the 30th minute, the Warhawks cut the lead in half when a corner kick off the foot of Kyle Clancy(Palatine, Ill./Palatine) ricocheted off the head off Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) and then Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) and into the goal.
UW-W tied the match in the 67th minute when a long cross from Evan Donini (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) found the foot of Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) who capitalized with his eighth goal of the season.
Loras regained the lead less than two minutes later, but 24 seconds after that the match was tied again. A long ball from near midfield from Garrett Morgando (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) found a sprawling Ceballos who headed it in for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
A red card on the Warhawks in the 71st minute meant they would play the remainder of the match a man down. That didn't stop them.
Although they did relinquish four shots to the Duhawks over the course of the next 13 minutes, none found the back of the net.
UW-W battled to get the ball to their offensive end and earned a corner in the 83rd minute. Clancy put the ball back in play and it was nearly cleared by Loras, but Jake Santellano (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was able to send it in the direction Morgando who scored the game-winner.
The Duhawks did have a chance late on a corner kick from the left side of the field that was targeting the upper right corner of the goal, but substitute goalkeeper Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's)made a spectacular save to preserve the Warhawk lead.
Loras outshot the Warhawks 20-17, including 11-8 on goal.
Anderson, who came off the bench in relief of Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) in the 20th minute, made seven saves to win his third match of the season.
UW-W will have a quick turnaround, playing back-to-back matches for the third time this season, when they return to the field tomorrow to host Finlandia (Mich.) at 5 p.m.
