Men’s Soccer Tops Minnesota Morris to Earn Top Seed in U.M.A.C. Tournament
MORRIS, Minn.: Elliot Chapman (Lancaster, England/Ripley St. Thomas) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the UW-Superior men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Minnesota Morris Saturday in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season finale for both teams.
Chapman's sixth goal of the season came from the penalty spot and was the game-winning marker in the 57th minute, making it a 2-0 game. The foul resulted in a red card for the Cougars to play with 10 men for the final 33 minutes of the match.
A senior and Lancaster, England native, Chapman assisted on the first goal of the game. He served a free kick into the box that was finished by Aaron Blanchard (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) in the 35th minute. The goal was the third of Blanchard's senior season.
Superior (16-2-1, 11-0-1) dominated play on the way to its completing an unbeaten conference season. The 'Jackets outshot UMM, 29-8, with 14 shots on target, and led, 9-5, in corner kicks.
Freshman Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) extended the lead to 3-0 in the 76th minute on his 10th goal of the season. Sophomore Archie Gjerdrum (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) assisted on the play.
The Cougars (6-11-3, 6-4-2) pulled one back in the 87th minute as Tristan Balk stripped a UWS player and put it past 'Jacket goalkeeper Ulrik Lager (Vollen, Norway/Asker VGS) (one save). Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) started for UWS, playing the first half.
Matt Marshall played the first 11 minutes in net for UMM, making two saves, before making way for Jake Peterson, who stopped nine shots.
Up Next: With the win, the Yellowjackets wrapped up the top seed in the U.M.A.C. tournament and will host a semifinal match against the winner of fourth-seeded UMM and No. 5 Crown Wednesday at 4 p.m.
