Hope Beats Kalamazoo In MIAA Tournament Opener
The pressure the Hope College men's soccer team likes to apply generated timely goals in a different fashion on Saturday.
The Flying Dutchmen beat Kalamazoo College 3-0 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium with goals off of three set pieces during the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament opener.
Senior Ben Hagman of Powell, Ohio (Olentangy Liberty HS) scored his first two goals of the season to help Hope (14-2-1 overall) advance to Tuesday's 7 p.m. semifinal at Calvin College.
"We haven't scored a ton on set pieces this year," head coach Dave Brandt said. "That stuff tends to even out. We have scored a lot from open play. Tonight was three set pieces. If you create enough pressure — we had 11 corners tonight — you have a chance to be dangerous."
Junior Logan Bylsma of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) gave the Flying Dutchmen a 1-0 lead 8 minutes, 21 seconds into the match when he headed in a corner from senior Christian Dault of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven).
It was Bylsma's team-leading 14th goal of the season.
