Calvin men, Wash U. women claim top billing in first rankings of 2017

In the first Top 25 rankings of the new season, 2016 men's runner-up Calvin and 2016 women's champion Washington U. are our panels' choices to fill the No. 1 spots. The Knights, who have started 4-0-0 including a season opening win over Ohio Wesleyan, sit on top despite defending champion Tufts garnering more first place votes. On the women's side, the top-ranked Bears have earned the distinction on the strength of a 4-0-0 opening run that included a victory over 2016 quarterfinalist Pomona-Pitzer.

Men's No. 2 Tufts have three shutouts to start their title defense. They are followed by Chicago, who entered last season's NCAA tournament undefeated and ranked No. 1, and perennial powerhouse Trinity (Texas). Five wins including away at Rowan have Lycoming among the big boys at No.5 followed by Rutgers-Newark who look to continue their impressive rise to national relevance over the past decade by contending for the national title. The biggest surprise of the young season may be John Carroll whose upset of Kenyon en route to a 4-0-0 start earned them a spot in the Top 10. Other less regular guests in the men's rankings include No. 13 Scranton and No. 21 Gettysburg.

William Smith, who topped the women's rankings for most of the 2016 season, starts at No. 2 this year after defeating Messiah for the second straight season. Coming in third with two first place votes is 2016 semifinalist Chicago who returned from a season-opening road trip to California with a pair of solid victories before boosting their record to 4-0-0 with a dominating win over Illinois Wesleyan. 2015 champion Williams slots in at No. 4 followed by Johns Hopkins who has kept five clean sheets against the likes of Rowan, Messiah, and Emory. One of the big early stories is MIT who sneaks into the Top 10 after bullying 2016 semifinalist Brandeis in their season opener to kick-start a 5 game winning streak. Geneseo State, another unfamiliar name nationally, is rewarded for their 4-0-0 start with a No. 17 ranking.
