Upstate Update - Week 3

By Mani Tafari

The Upstate Update brings you up to speed on Division III men's soccer in the "Upstate" New York region, home to the SUNYAC, Liberty League, and Empire 8. Several key matches will be recapped each week along with a more in-depth look at a Game of the Week.

Game of the Week

Geneseo State at Hobart

Saturday, September 19

The relationship between the Liberty League and the SUNYAC is one of a big brother and little brother—both of course viewing themselves as the former and not the latter. A strong rivalry that serves to prepare participants for league tournaments and beyond.

The Season Thus Far

Two teams preparing to launch a bid for supremacy in their respective conferences highlighted the most exciting week of the young season. Hobart entered the game on a high, riding a three game winning streak which included victories over Rochester and Potsdam State. Geneseo State entered the game unbeaten on the season, but with three straight ties following three victories to start the season.

Game On

The game remained scoreless until three minutes before the half when Statesman senior defender Tyler Niles scored to put the hosts in front. Hobart, who outshot the Blue Knights 15-6 in the competition, doubled their advantage in the 50th minute off a strike by sophomore Zack Poretz. The game would remain 2-0 giving Hobart the much deserved shut-out. The win was comfortable for Hobart, now 5-1-0, who entertained the home crowd by showcasing a talented and youthful squad.

Take Away

Hobart is for real. The team aims to build on last season’s trip to the conference playoffs and understands the importance of a good start in the challenging league portion of the schedule. This is a confident bunch hungry for even more success. Geneseo State (3-1-3) picks up their first loss, but fourth blemish as we approach mid-season. They must right the ship soon in a very unforgiving SUNYAC.

Around the Region

Plattsburgh State 2, Skidmore 1 - A flying start for Plattsburgh State (8-0-0), one of the few perfect teams left in the country. This traditional powerhouse of the SUNYAC might be ready to once again make its mark.

Oneonta State 2, Montclair State 1 - Big win for Oneonta State (4-2-1) who shows signs of life after an early season stumble. With nine teams above .500, the SUNYAC race should be more competitive than ever in 2015

St. Lawrence 1, Buffalo State 0 - St. Lawrence (5-1-2) squeaks by to get its first win in four games. A big upcoming battle against undefeated Plattsburgh State will be the final test before the beginning of a grueling league schedule.

RPI 3, Potsdam State 1 - RPI (7-0-0) continues to impress. After an incredible start, the Parker project in Potsdam State (6-2-0) hits a bit of a speed bump

Rochester 3, Rochester Tech 2 - Rochester (3-2-1) wins the derby and gains much needed confidence after an unusual sub-par start to the season.

Cortland State 4, Clarkson 2 - Score one for the SUNYAC as Cortland State (5-1-1) dispatches their Liberty League foe. Clarkson (2-4-1) must now rely on great play in the next few weeks in order to salvage post season hopes.

Alfred 4, St. John Fisher 0 - Alfred (5-1-1 / 1-0-0) opens Empire 8 play with a big shut-out victory.

Houghton 3, Nazareth 1 - Houghton (3-3-1 / 1-0-0) evens their record to .500 by beating a hardworking Nazareth team (0-7-0 / 0-1-0).

Teams of the Week

RPI continue their brilliant run of form they hope will continue as league play opens up this weekend. An improved Bard team will be their next hurdle.
