Game of the Week
Stevens (4-1-0) at Vassar (3-1-0)
Saturday, September 8
This week’s game of the week features two teams with big ambitions for the 2018 season.
The Brewers enter the year seeking to secure their 12th straight winning season.
Stevens meanwhile have been the dominant squad in the Empire 8 and were looking for their biggest win of the season.
The Season Thus Far
Vassar began the season with three straight wins in their preparation for a competitive league schedule.
Stevens opened their campaign with back to back wins before suffering an overtime setback to the Red Dragons from Oneonta.
As expected when these two teams play, the game was tight and competitive throughout the first half with both teams feeling each other out and staying tight and compact on defense. The half ended scoreless with the Brewers clinging to a slight 4-3 shot advantage at the break.
The deadlock was broken by the home team in the 58th minute when Brewer junior Nathaniel Kim blasted a free kick through the wall for his first collegiate goal. The lead stood for 10 minutes before Stevens got the well deserved equalizer from Adam Silva.
Stevens continued to grow into the game and their consistent pressure paid off with goals in the 76th and 77th minutes of the game. A dominant second half by the Ducks saw them outshoot Vassar 12-6 for the game including a 7-1 shot on goal advantage. Stevens had 5 corner kicks compared to 1 for the Brewers in a chippy game where both teams committed 14 fouls a piece.
A 3-1 win was a fair result for the road team who used a commanding second half performance to move to 3-1 on the season.
