Royals-William Paterson Battle To 0-0 Tie in Season Opener Thursday Evening
SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton and William Paterson University battled to a 0-0 tie in double overtime in the season-opening match for both teams Thursday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.
William Paterson, coming off its most successful season in school history, which included a 14-4-3 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament, made things interesting down the stretch. In the first overtime period, a shot by junior forward Naeem Boucher (Paterson, NJ/St. Benedict's Preparatory) found the back of the net, but the Pioneers were called for offside.
With just seconds remaining in the second overtime period, senior forward Joe Maddolin (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) headed a ball that hit the crossbar and landed in front of the Royal goal, but the ball never broke the plane before a Royal defender was able to clear it away.
In the final four minutes of regulation, Boucher had four good shot attempts, but came up short each time. One shot was blocked, two others went wide, and his last attempt with only 1:15 remaining went over the crossbar.
Scranton nearly got on the scoreboard in the 84th minute when Patrick Daly (Lebanon, NJ/Immaculata-Somerville) drilled a shot from 14 yards out on a corner kick served up by senior forward Joseph Burbella (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg), but the ball sailed just right of the post.
In the second start of his career, junior goalie Jamie Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made a match-high eight saves, while William Paterson's Zach Collins (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) stopped three shots.
The Royals now hold an 8-3-3 advantage in the all-time series with William Paterson.
Scranton will continue a three-match home stand at Fitzpatrick Field this Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4, against Dickinson College and Marywood University, respectively. Both matches are set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
