TOWSON, Md. - The Wesley College men's soccer team picked up a 1-1 tie against No. 11 Johns Hopkins in the Goucher College Soccer Classic.
The Wolverines struck first to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Late in the 36th minute, Jacob Yaeger (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) pushed the ball back to Kyle Long (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye), who banged home his third goal in two games.
The Blue Jays put eight shots on net in the first 45 minutes, but Mark Mattern (Carney, Md./Kenwood) turned away each one to keep Wesley in the lead.
Johns Hopkins broke through to tie things up when Mark Spencer found the back of the net early in the 54th minute with an assist from Sean Coleman.
The teams were forced to go to extra time with the outcome unresolved through the opening 90 minutes. With just 11 seconds left in the second overtime, Wesley had a two on one breakaway, but John Belanger came up with a big save on a shot by Nico Scarpato (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township).
Mattern finished with 13 saves for Wesley.
"It was a great effort early in the season against a ranked team like (Johns) Hopkins," said head coach Steve Clark. "We need to carry that effort over against Penn State (Berks)."
Wesley faces the Nittany Lions on Sunday, September 4 on the second day of the Goucher College Soccer Classic.
