Burbella Lifts Royals Past Ursinus
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Senior midfielder Joseph Burbella scored twice within a 10-minute span of the first half to lift The University of Scranton to a 2-1 victory over Ursinus College in non-conference action Wednesday evening.
Burbella converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute for the match-winning goal as the Royals won their first match of the season and improved to 1-2-2. The loss dropped the Bears to 1-4.
Burbella broke a 0-0 tie with an unassisted goal in the 34th minutes, taking a ball that slipped through the Ursinus defense and knocking a shot past Bear goalie Mike Alfieri on a break-away situation. Ursinus tied it up in the 43rd minute when Richie Shultz lifted a shot over Royal junior goalie Jamie Dillon's head for a goal on a play set up by Jean Carlo Cordova.
Ursinus's momentum, however, was short-lived. Forty seconds later, Burbella converted the penalty kick to set the final score.
Dillon and Alfieri were each credited with four saves.
Scranton held a slight 10-9 advantage in shots and a 2-0 margin in corner kicks.
Burbella's goals were the fifth and sixth of his career.
