Johns Hopkins, York Battle to Scoreless Draw
BALTIMORE, MD – For the fourth straight meeting, Johns Hopkins and York played to overtime as the regional rivals battled to a scoreless draw in non-conference soccer action at Homewood Field on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays move to 3-2-2 on the season, while the Spartans also see their record go to 3-2-2.
In a game that saw 42 total fouls and four yellow cards issued, it was fitting that before the game was even 30 seconds old, there was a foul and a caution. Blue Jays' freshman goalie Nick Cerrone came out to the top of the box to challenge on a breakaway and fouled a Spartan as he kicked the ball away and out of danger. York set up a free kick at the top left corner of the box but Mike Gill's shot off the restart sailed high.
Hopkins had a great chance in the 68th minute when senior Sean Coleman got through the Spartan defense and goalie Jesse Derksen came sliding out head first to knock the ball away near the top of the box. The ball kicked out to freshman Kotaro Mitsuhashi, who got a great shot off, but it was kicked away by the York defense. After 90 scoreless minutes, the teams headed to extra time when both teams had chances late in the first extra period. Aaron Beale rifled a shot at the Hopkins goal in the 97th minute, but it ricocheted off the cross bar. With time winding down in the first overtime, Hopkins earned a corner kick. Coleman struck the kick for the Blue Jays and the ball came to senior Corey Adams, who headed a low shot that seemed destined for the goal, but Matt DeLong just got his feet together to stop the shot and send the game to a second overtime.
Cerrone finished with four saves to post his second straight shutout, while Derksen had three saves and got a pair of defensive stops from his teammates. York had the edge in shots (11-9) and corners (2-1) as the match-up ended in a scoreless draw for the third time in the last four meetings.
Hopkins returns to action and Centennial Conference play on Friday, September 23 as the 19th-ranked Muhlenberg Mules visit Homewood Field. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
