Two Second Half Goals Lift Scranton Past York

More news about: York (Pa.) men's team

YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer dropped a hard-fought 2-1 non-conference decision against the University of Scranton in York, PA on Wednesday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Millville, PA but had to be moved to York because of the wet field conditions at Millville High School.

The Spartans fall to 3-3-3 overall while the Royals improve to 3-4-2 for the campaign.

The Green and White struck for the game's opening tally in the 11th minute. Sophomore Pablo Martinez captured a loose ball just past midfield. He dribbled the ball for a few yards before placing a beautiful pass to the foot of fellow sophomore Chris Weaver. Weaver collected the pass and beat the hard charging Scranton goalie Tomasz Marczak with a dribble before sliding a shot into the back of the net for the goal. The tally was Weaver's first of the year as York seized the early momentum.

York looked like it had another goal in the 30th minute as sophomore Taylor Brummitt had a break away. Brummitt lofted a shot over Marczak and it looked like it was ticketed for the back of the net. Unfortunately for York, Brummitt's attempt hit the crossbar and caromed back into play. The ball sat in front of the goal before it was cleared by the Royals as the guests averted a 2-0 deficit. That play proved to be huge later in the contest.

The Royals had a good chance to score late in the half as Joseph Burbella received a pass inside the box in the 43rd minute. He headed the ball toward the Spartan goal but York netminder Jesse Derksen made the right play coming out to challenge the shot, snaring the ball as York maintained their 1-0 lead heading to the break.

York had the better of the play to start the second half but the Royals slowed started to take back the momentum. Scranton notched the equalizer in the 69th minute. There was a scrum in front of the Spartan goal and Nick Glavan collected the loose sphere and drove a shot off the left post that clanked off the post and into the goal for his first tally of the year.

The Royals had a great chance to take the lead at the 75:23 mark as Derksen saved a header from Glavan, preserving the tie. Unfortunately, the game would remain tied for exactly one more minute as after the Royals regained possession, Glavan dribbled the ball down the right flank. He placed a perfectly centered pass on the head of Jimmy Pealer who knocked the ball past a diving Derksen for what proved to be the game winner.

The Spartans didn't go down without a fight as they had two good chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Weaver had a driving shot from just outside the right side of the box that snuck harmlessly over the crossbar with 6:57 remaining on the clock. Senior Mike Gill then had a chance to chip the goalie with 2:14 remaining but Marczak was up to the task as he snagged the attempt for the save.

York finished the game holding a 16-14 edge in total shots while the Royals had an 8-5 margin in shots on goal. Scanton had a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks while they also recorded a 17-13 edge in fouls in the contest.

Derksen finished the contest with six saves while Marczak recorded four saves in the win.

The loss is the Spartans' first against Scranton in four matches. York had outscored the Royals 13-2 in the team's previous three meetings.

The Spartans return to Graham Field on Saturday afternoon for a big Capital Athletic Conference showdown with nationally ranked Salisbury University. Kick off is slated for 3:00 pm at Graham Field.
