Brooklyn Battles Hunter to 1-1 Draw
Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team battled to a even 1-1 tie against the reigning City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champions Hunter College earlier today at Kingsborough Community College field.
The Bulldogs are now 1-7-2 overall on the season and 0-4-1 in the CUNYAC, while the Hawks move to 3-6-3 overall on the year and 2-1-2 in league play.
Junior Miguel Veliz-Fitz started off the scoring putting BC up on the board first, as he took a cross in front of the net from sophomore Pajtim Gjonbalaj to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 14th minute. The goal was Veliz-Fitz's third of the season.
The match would remain fairly even throughout the rest of the half, as Brooklyn would head into the halftime break up by the 1-0 margin.
The Hawks would not go down without a fight as Hunter came out of the intermission determined to net the equalizer. The visitors would not have to wait long, as Michael Ziegler knotted the game at 1-1 in the 52nd. The BC defense was unable to clear the ball out of its zone, which allowed Ziegler to get a shot off on goal and find the back of the net.
Both teams would have its chances the rest of the way; however, each goaltender came through with vital saves in key parts of the game as the game headed through the two overtime periods.
Sophomore Stamatis Boundouris played the entire 110 minutes, allowing one goal and recording seven saves; while his counterpart Zade Haobsh also played all 110 minutes in net, surrendering a lone goal and also making seven saves.
The match featured physical play throughout, as 35 total fouls were called, to go along with seven yellow cards being handed out.
The Hawks held the shooting edge 24-16, as well as the corner kick advantage, 8-3.
Brooklyn will return to CUNYAC action this Monday, October 10th, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY).
