Royals End Season With Dramatic 2-1 Victory Over Juniata Tuesday Afternoon
HUNTINGDON, Pa.—The University of Scranton men's soccer team ended its 2011 season on a positive note Tuesday afternoon, pulling out a dramatic 2-1 victory over Juniata College in Landmark Conference action.
And what a finish it turned out to be.
With one second remaining, junior co-captain Patrick Daley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) headed in a ball off a sideline throw-in that deflected off of several players for a goal—his first of the season—as the Royals improved to 6-8-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference. The loss drops Juniata to 5-8-2 overall and 1-6 in the Landmark.
Scranton, which limited the Eagles to just four shot attempts, fell behind 1-0 in the 32nd minute of the first half, as Evan LaTourrette (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) found the back of the net on a play set up by senior midfielder David Grimm (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) and freshman midfielder Robby Higgins (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
After out-shooting Juniata 13-2 in the first half, the Royals continued to fire away and eventually got through in the 70th minute when junior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) knocked in a shot from five yards out on a ball served up by sophomore forward Derek Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights). McGuiness's goal was his second of the season and fourth of his career.
Junior Jamie Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) and freshman Tomasz Marczak (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) split time evenly in goal for the Royals. Marczak made two saves to pick up the win.
The match was the final one for Royal seniors Joseph Burbella (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg Area) and Nick Glavan (East Northport, NY/St. Anthony's). In 65 matches, Burbella finished with eight goals and six assists for 22 total points. This past season, he led the Royals in goals (4) and total points (8). Glavan had five goals and eight assists for 18 total points in 57 matches in his career.
