Brooklyn Battles CCNY to 1-1 Draw
Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team opened up City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a hard-fought 1-1 tie against the City College of New York (CCNY), this afternoon at Brooklyn College Field. The Bulldogs are now 3-3-1 overall on the season and 0-0-1 in the CUNYAC, while the Beaver move to 1-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference.
BC controlled much of the tempo in the opening half, as the Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 17-6 in the period, which also led to an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. However, CCNY goalkeeper Danny Hernandez was up to challenge, posting eight saves in the first half as the teams would head into the intermission break scoreless.
The second half featured much of the same as neither team was able to take advantage of their scoring opportunities, as both defenses shined on the day. That would change in the 66th minute, when the Beavers' Matthew Mbamelu put the visitors up on the board, finding the back of the net via a free kick.
Brooklyn would not go down without a fight, however; as the home team would find the equalizer just a minute later in the 67th minute, as junior Alwyn Adams found classmate Pajtim Gjonbalaj with a slick pass down the middle into the box, allowing Gjonbalaj to beat Hernandez to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team would be able to score the rest of the half, as the game headed into overtime. The defenses would continue to shine in both overtime frames as the teams would conclude the match in a 1-1 tie.
Brooklyn junior Stamatis Boundouris played all 110 minutes in goal, allowing one goal and recording two saves; while CCNY's Hernandez was tested all game long, racking up 12 saves on the day and allowing the lone goal.
Brooklyn will continue with conference play this Saturday, September 22nd, as the Bulldogs will welcome the Cardinals of York College to BC Field. The match is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start time.
