Brooklyn Extends Win Streak with 1-0 Shutout Over NYU-Poly
Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team continued its solid play on the season with a 1-0 victory over borough rival Polytechnic Institute of New York University on Monday night at Aviator Sports Complex. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 5-3-1 overall on the season; while the Fighting Blue Jays falls to 3-5 overall on the year.
Over its last five games, Brooklyn holds a 4-0-1 record, while outscoring its opponents 15-2. The shutout was also BC's second straight of the season and fourth overall on the year.
The Fighting Blue Jays controlled the majority of the game, holding a 15-4 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks on the night.
Despite being outshot in the match, the Bulldogs made the most of their slim opportunities, as junior Pajtim Gjonbalaj, the reining City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week, continued to pace the BC offense, taking a cross from teammate Peterson Petit Frere, to beat the keeper for his fifth goal of the season, putting Brooklyn up 1-0 in the 55th minute.
Gjonbalaj has now scored in four straight games and has registered three game winning goals on the year.
Sophomore goalie Saul Gonzalez Perez, making his second straight career start, posted his second consecutive shutout, recording seven saves, while playing all 90 minutes in net. His counterpart, Paul Lima, also played all 90 minutes in goal, while allowing one goal and registering two saves.
"I was pleased with tonight's performance," said head coach Rawle Hensford. "It was a deserved victory where everyone had a solid performance. I was happy with the quality we displayed and our spirit throughout the game."
Brooklyn will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 26th, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on CUNYAC rival Hunter College. The match is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start time at Randall's Island - Field #10.
