Brooklyn Prepares for CUNYAC Championships

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team will enter the 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Men's Soccer Championships as the #2 seed, after posting an 11-4-2 overall record, to go along with a 5-1-2 mark in CUNYAC play. This will be Brooklyn's first appearance in the CUNYAC Championships since the 2009 season.

The Bulldogs will open the conference championships by hosting the #7 seeded Hunter College Hawks (2-12-2, 2-4-2 CUNYAC) in the quarterfinals round this Wednesday, October 24th at 4:00 pm at Brooklyn College Field.

BC and Hunter played a scoreless tie, 0-0, in their regular season matchup back on September 26th at Randall's Island.

The Bulldogs are currently playing their best soccer of the season, as BC is riding a six-game winning streak and are unbeaten in the month of October. Brooklyn is undefeated at home this season with a 7-0-1 record and is 10-1-2 over its last 13 games.

This season, Brooklyn's offense has been powered by seniors Pajtim Gjonbalaj and Alwyn Adams. Gjonbalaj, a three-year member of the BC Men's Soccer team, has had a career year for the Bulldogs this season, recording a team-high 10 goals on the year, to go along with six assists for 26 points on the season. Adams, a transfer, made an immediate impact to the BC offense in his first and only season, registering eight goals and five assists for 21 points on the season.

Another transfer, junior Dmitry Prokofyev, has also been a vital cog in the Bulldogs offense, chipping in with six goals and three assists for 15 points. Junior Peterson Petit Frere has been another key contributor on offense with three goals and six assists for 12 points.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior Denton Laing, juniors Peter Vavalle and Taras Frankivskyy and freshman Steve Orellana have all been key figures to a stingy defense that has allowed just 16 goals in 17 games, to go along with eight shutouts.

Junior goalkeeper Stamatis Boundouris has played over 1308 minutes in goal for Brooklyn this season, allowing just 16 goals, to go along with 61 saves. He has posted a 1.10 goals-against-average and a .792 save percentage.

The winner between BC and Hunter will advance to the semifinals round on Saturday, October 27th where the winner of #3 City College of New York and #6 Lehman College with await. The semifinals round will be held at Randall's Island with start times of 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
