Methodist Bests Averett, 4-3 in PK, to Advance to USA South Finals
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The Methodist men's soccer team advanced to the finals of the USA South Conference Tournament, squeaking past Averett, 4-3, in penalty kicks on Friday afternoon at the Smith River Sports Complex.
Trailing 1-0 late in regulation, the third-seeded Monarchs tied the match at 1-1 when Shane Davis scored his first goal of the season of an assist from Eric McGinnis in the 86th minute to force overtime.
After neither team scored over a pair of overtimes, the two teams advanced to penalty kicks.Eirik Nordseth, Anders Petersen and Nahom Hargwoin gave the Monarchs a 3-2 advantage after they made each of their PKs and the second-seeded Cougars converted on just two of their first three.
After Davis missed for the Monarchs and Magnus Ferngren did as well for Averett, a good attempt by McGinnis after AU's Nathan Brown had knotted the PK round at 3-3 secured the win for the Monarchs and sent them into the finals where they will take on fifth-seeded Greensboro, which knocked off No. 1 CNU, 2-0, earlier in the day.
Averett had taken a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game on a goal by Kevin Vigebo and held that lead until the dramatic finish.
The USA South finals will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm. Methodist will be seeking its first conference title since the 1996 season.
