The Yellowjacket men's soccer team was riding high after winning last weekend's Advantage Emblem Cup, but they had to quickly put the success behind them as they hit the road on Wednesday to take on Augsburg College, who ranks as one of the team's fiercest rivals despite the fact they do not share a conference. The road trip got off to a fine start, but then the second half hit and the Auggies pounced on the Yellowjackets.

Ben Henry scored a goal in the 49th minute and the Auggies would add two more in a span of 23 minutes to hand the Yellowjackets their first loss of 2013, 3-1 at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.

The Yellowjackets got off to the start they wanted, carrying the play for much of the first half and outshooting the Auggies 6-4 in the opening frame. They broke the scoreless tie at 14:56 when Alberto Rivero-Garcia (Santander, Spain) moved the ball ahead to Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) who sprinted up the left side and let a shot go that eluded Augsburg goalkeeper Clayton Lynch to make it 1-0. For Grand, a Division I transfer from Drake Univeristy, it was his first goal of the season.

The score remained tied into half time, but once the teams returned to the pitch, the Auggies put the hammer down and took over the match.

Just 3:36 into the second half Henry drew the Auggies even when sprinted down the right side and beat Yellowjacket goalkeeper Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong). Twenty minutes later Henry struck again, scoring the eventual game-winning goal with a header off of a corner kick to make it 2-1 in the 69th minute. Augsburg closed out the scoring 2:46 later when Grant Griffin stole the ball in front and scored an unassisted goal, his second of the year, to make the final 3-1.

The Auggies outshot the Yellowjackets 14-4 in the second half.

Elder, the reigning WIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week, made his third straight start in goal for the Yellowjackets and finished with five saves on eight shots on goal in the losing effort. At the other end Lynch picked up the win, making two saves on three shots on goal.

The Yellowjackets (1-1-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) will continue their early-season road swing when they head to Oshkosh, Wis. this weekend. There, they will play a pair of non-conference matches, the first against Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, September 7 at 3:30 p.m.
