Schiers lifts Norwich over MCLA, 1-0
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) scored in the 80th minute to lift the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Mass. College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the CIAO Classic.
Schiers second goal of his career couldn't have come at a better time as he helped end the Cadets' mini two-match winless streak by scoring off an assist from fellow freshman Kyle Spillane (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Norwich (3-1-1, 0-0-0 GNAC) carried the play in the second half, outshooting MCLA 6-5 after the Trailblazers held a 6-2 advantage in the opening 45 minutes.
However, junior goalkeepers Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Greg Payne (State College, Pa.) stood tall, making all four saves to combine to pick up Norwich's fourth shutout of the season in five games.
Hallstrom and Payne each had to come up with big saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Hallstrom made a great diving save to his left on Edward Boateng in the 19th minute and held onto the ball to prevent a rebound attempt. Payne made an equally impressive save in the 84th minute to rob Sean Kenney on a header attempt by tapping the ball high over the cross bar.
Senior captain Ryan Campbell (Damscus, Md.) earned CIAO Classic Defensive MVP honors by leading the Cadets' defense to two straight shutout performances.
Norwich was the runner-up to Union, who claimed the overall classic title with a 6-0 win over MCLA on Saturday and then a 2-1 win over Castleton on Sunday.
Norwich continues non-conference play on Saturday when the Cadets return home to host in-state rival Middlebury under the lights at Sabine Field. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
