St. Olaf snaps Yellowjacket win streak
The Yellowjackets entered Sunday afternoon's match with St. Olaf College knowing they needed to put the ball in the back of the net more than they have been. Riding a three game-winning streak heading into the game while playing their best soccer of the season, the Yellowjackets liked their chances of doing just that against the nine-win Oles. Unfortunately, St. Olaf College was the only team to score in a 1-0 shutout of the Yellowjackets.
Both teams had a couple solid scoring opportunities in an up and down game throughout the first half of play at Public Schools Stadium. The goalkeepers on each side made the saves they needed to in order to keep the game at 0-0 through the first half. The Yellowjackets edged out the Oles in shots through one half of soccer at 7-6.
The second half proved to be the same story as the shots were fairly even with St. Olaf upping the Yellowjackets 7-5. At the pace the game was being played at, the first team to score was more than likely going to win the game. Unfortunately, that team was St. Olaf when Stephen Johnson took control of the ball and squib kicked it over to Mackenzie Lund. Lund saw the perfect lane between him and the net about twenty yards away where he took a shot that beat Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) on the top-left hand corner of the net to give St. Olaf the 1-0 lead at 74:18.
Elder registered three saves for the Yellowjackets while Ben Braman stopped five shots for the Oles.
The Yellowjackets (7-5-2, 1-0-1 WIAC) will travel to Mankato, Minn. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to take on Bethany Lutheran College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
