Yellowjackets run away from Finlandia

More news about: UW-Superior men's team

The Yellowjackets came into this given contest with the mindset that this isn't the final home game of the season.  With playoff positioning at stake, the Yellowjackets came out firing on all cylinders with an 11-0 blowout of Finlandia University.

Ben Royce (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) got things rolling for the Yellowjackets at 2:37 when he took a pass from Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) in front of the net and knocked a shot home to make the score 1-0.  The Yellowjackets went on a scoring tirade for the next ten minutes, notching three goals within that time span.  Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) played a big part in that with two goals of his own at 4:03 and 6:26 to widen the Yellowjacket lead to 3-0.

Ben Kasper (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) added on to the fun with a goal at 11:44 to make the score 4-0.  Nate Engel (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) dug the Lion wound deeper with a nice pass to Brian Chapman (Maple Grove, Minn.) 15 yards out.  Chapman finished the job at 12:53 with a shot to the back of the net to widen the Yellowjacket lead to 5-0 before Yellowjacket head coach Joe Mooney subbed out the starting lineup.

Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ) gave the Yellowjackets a 6-0 lead before halftime when he recovered a Lion turnover at their own end, then took a shot that beat Lion goalkeeper Miguel Gamez at 30:26.

The second half saw the Yellowjackets notch five more goals to close out the contest.  Dan Baga (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) led off the scoring with a goal a minute into halftime to widen the deficit to 7-0.  A trio of Yellowjackets made the most of their opportunity through out the rest of the game.  Taylor Lissick (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) came off the bench and fired a shot from 20 yards out to make the score 8-0 at 76:04.  The goal was Lissick's first of the season.  James Menzies (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) and Logan Klatt (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) followed that up with goals at 78:57 and 82:21 to make the score 10-0.  Those goals were collegiate firsts for Menzies and Klatt.  Lissick rounded out the Yellowjacket scoring at 86:36 to make the score 11-0.

Zach Harwerth (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) stopped two shots for the Yellowjackets while Miguel Gamez made 10 saves for the Lions.

The Yellowjackets (9-6-3, 2-1-1 WIAC) will end the 2013 regular season on Friday, Nov. 1 when they travel to Carthage College.  Game time is at 5:00 p.m.
