Oglethorpe falls to Gettysburg in opening round of NCAA tournament

More news about: Oglethorpe men's team

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team saw their season come to a close Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Virginia, as they fell to the Gettysburg Bullets 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. The result moved the Stormy Petrels to 14-5 to end the season.

Gettysburg started the game off on the right foot, scoring a goal in the opening three minutes. They controlled the action for much of the early part of the first half and maintained their one-goal advantage, outshooting Oglethorpe 6-2 during the period. The Petrels looked to work their way back into the game during the final 15 minutes of the half, and senior forward Ryan Marcano won a free kick just outside of the box in the 40th minute. Senior midfielder Gabe Alvarez didn't have enough room to get his effort over the wall and under the crossbar, though, and he put his shot just over. The Bullets then doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute, putting the Petrels behind the eight-ball headed into the halftime break.

Oglethorpe came out of halftime and threw numbers at the Gettysburg goal right away, winning a corner kick in the 46th minute. They weren't able to do anything with the opportunity, though, and the Bullets scored again in the 55th minute to make it 3-0. An Oglethorpe own goal made it 4-0 in the 65th minute, all but clinching the game for the Bullets. They added their fifth in the 90th minute.

Gettysburg outshot the Petrels 11-6 for the game, including a 6-3 mark on goal. They also took seven corner kicks to Oglethorpe's five.

The Petrels rounded out the season with their third NCAA tournament appearance in program history, and their second in the last three years. They also secured their fifth straight SAA regular season title and their third straight trip to the SAA final in 2019. In addition, they extended their SAA regular season unbeaten streak to 27 games.
