Wheaton Blanks WPI in NEWMAC Tourney Opening Round

NORTON, MA- Freshman Rebecca Raymond (Lowell, MA/Lowell) notched two goals and senior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) tacked on a tally and one assist to lead the fourth-seeded Wheaton College women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over fifth seed Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament opening round on Tuesday at Mirrione Stadium.

Pitching their fifth straight shutout, the Lyons, who entered today tied for sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), improved to 16-3-2 while advancing to the league tourney semifinal round for the 16th straight season.  Wheaton faces top seed Springfield College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Having its five-game win streak snapped, WPI finishes the season with an 8-10-1 mark.

Freshman Christina Angione (Manhattan, NY/Beacon School) assisted the hosts' initial two tallies, which came just 3:29 apart, first finding Raymond in the box with a short cross from left to right and eventual finish 9:39 in.  At 13:08, Hough one-timed Angione's pass into the back of the net for her team-high-tying 10th goal of the year.

Hough and Raymond made the score 3-0 at the 21:55 mark when Raymond's right-footed boot from inside the box on the right side found the upper left side netting.  The Lyons took all 13 of the opening half's shots while holding a 3-2 edge on corner kicks.

The second half saw little action on either offensive end, as Wheaton held advantages of 4-3 in shots and 4-1 on corners.  Lyon junior goalkeeper Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield), who came up with huge sliding save from point-blank range with 45 seconds remaining to preserve the shutout, hasn't allowed a goal in nearly 500 minutes dating back to October 16.

Engineer freshman Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY/Penfield) finished with six saves in the loss, including four stops in the opening half.
