TACOMA, Wash. - Cal Lutheran leaves Washington State with a pair of wins after defeating nationally ranked No. 24 Puget Sound on Monday to close out its trip. Kristin Cameron's goal in the 69th minute was the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over the Loggers.
Box Score: CLU 2, UPS 1 - F
It was another game dominated statistically by the Regals whom were unable to score in the first half after putting five of its 12 shots on target. Kirsten DiPippo's near-miss off the crossbar and five saves by UPS goalkeeper Casey Thayer preserved a scoreless tie at the half.
For the second straight game a CLU newcomer scored the game's opening goal. Freshman Taylor Will put away her first collegiate goal in the 64th minute of play and led all players taking five shots.
However the feelings brought on by scoring and taking the lead over an in-region perennial powerhouse quickly vanished. UPS' Brenda Seymore scored just 30 seconds later to bring the game even.
Seymore's goal is the first and only shot on goal by a CLU opponent in two games this season.
The Cal Lutheran offensive assault continued to pressure the opposition with 26 shots overall and 11 that were on target. The persistence paid off at the 68:14 mark when Kristin Cameron scored on a free kick giving CLU a lead it would hold to the end.
In two games thus far the Regals defense has held the opposition nearly silent only four shots and one goal and no corner kicks surrendered. In contrast Cal Lutheran has taken 48 shots, scored five goals and earned 23 corner kicks.
CLU net minder Tina Hedwall played all 90 minutes to pick up her first win of the season. Thayer made nine saves in goal for the Loggers.
Cal Lutheran (2-0-0) will head to Texas to face Texas Lutheran and defending NCAA National Champion Hardin-Simmons on back-to-back days starting Friday, Sept. 9.
