Wheaton (Ill.) shuts out UW-Stevens Point, 3-0
Stevens Point, Wis. – The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team, ranked second in this week's D3soccer.com poll, shut out UW-Stevens Point 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Today's win was the fourth consecutive shutout for the Thunder, as Wheaton has recorded 379 consecutive minutes of scoreless soccer in the stretch.
Wheaton is now 7-0 on the year, while the Pointers fall to 5-2. The Thunder will host Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday at 7 PM under the lights at Joe Bean Stadium.
Junior Keri Shannon gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead at the 12:33 mark of the match when she netted her fifth goal of the season. Wheaton remained a 1-0 leader at halftime.
Wheaton's lead increased to 2-0 when freshman Sarah Guidera scored about 1-1/2 minutes in the second half when she recorded her fifth goal of the year at the 46:24 mark of the contest. Guidera's goal was assisted by senior Ali Kopelman. Freshman Annie Hamilton scored her first collegiate goal at the 72:08 mark of the match to account for the final score of 3-0.
Wheaton out-shot the Pointers 19-7 and held the Thunder held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Thunder goalkeeper Hilary Barreto made four saves for the guests in 75 minutes of work in the nets. Wheaton freshman Kelsey Graham played the final 15 minutes in goal for the Thunder. UW-Stevens Point netminder Brittany Marx played 90 minutes in goal for the Pointers, with three goals allowed and nine saves to her credit.
