Blue Knights Shut Out Maritime, 2-0, At Reinhart Field
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost to visiting Mount Saint Mary College, 2-0, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Privateers to 2-7-1 overall (0-3 Skyline), while the Blue Knights improve to 7-2-1 (2-0 Skyline).
The Mount registered 26 shots on the night, to just one by Maritime. Junior goalkeeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) made 14 saves despite the defeat. The Privateers looked strong in the first half and held the Blue Knights scoreless into the halftime break.
MSMC freshman Vanessa DiSilvio scored the first goal of the game in the 48th minute when she rifled a shot under the crossbar from 25 yards out off of Marietta's hands and into the twine. Classmate Nicole Gianotti picked up an assist on the tally. The second goal came just 11 minutes later as sophomore Brigit Burgio headed in a corner by junior Lindsey Oro to give Mount Saint Mary a 2-0 lead.
The Privateers lone shot of the night was the first of the game and came off the foot of senior Samantha Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) in the 10th minute, but it was blocked by a Mount defender.
Maritime returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1, when the squad travels out to Medford, N.Y. to take on Skyline-opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Medford Athletic Complex.
