Wheaton women's soccer team opens 2012 with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College women's soccer team rallied with two second-half goals to earn a 2-1 victory against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the season-opener for both teams at Wheaton's Bob Baptista Invitational. Wheaton, ranked fourth in the NSCAA Division III Preseason Coaches' Poll, is now 1-0 on the year.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Madi Shove that was assisted by Isabel Lester at the 19:18 mark of the match. Wheaton offensively took control early in the second half, but Wheaton was unable to convert its attack into a tying goal until the 78th minute when #Shelby Anthony# blasted a ball into the net from about 35 yards out into the opposite corner of the net. The Thunder attack again pressed the Athenas in the final minute of regulation and a shot by #Val Lelle# was deflected to junior #Leah DeMoss# who blasted the ball into the net to give the Thunder a 2-1 edge with 57-seconds left in the contest.
Wheaton out-shot the Athenas 16-7, including an 11-3 edge in the second half. Wheaton goalkeeper #Hilary Barreto# made three saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work. CMS netminder Hannah Dunham made two saves and allowed two second-half goals in the Athenas' loss. Wheaton held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks in the match.
The Thunder will host Principia College on Saturday at 4:30 PM in the second day of action for the tournament. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will take on UW-LaCrosse at 11:30 AM in Saturday's opening match. Principia defeated UW-LaCrosse in Friday's opening match of the tournament.
