Hyduke's two goals lift Stout to win over St. Benedict
MENOMONIE (September 9, 2012) - Alix Hyduke's (Jr, Duluth, Minn) scored twice in the second half to give UW-Stout a 2-1 win over the College of St. Benedict Sunday at the River Heights soccer field.
After a scoreless first half, Hyduke broke through a crowd in front of the net to score unassisted in the 54th minute.
The Blazers (1-1-1) answered back in the 71st minute when Natalia Kruse took a pass from Ali O'Brien to tie the score.
Hyduke gave Stout the win in the 84th minute when she dribbled into the box and scored the game winner. While Hyduke had three game winning goals last season, this is the first time in her collegiate career she has scored more than one goal in a game.
The first half was scoreless as neither team was able to mount much of an attack. The Blazers put three shots on goal in the first stanza, while Stout (2-2-0) put no shots on net in the first half. For the game, the Blazers, which were ranked fifth in the North Region, put four shots on net, while Stout put three, of which two tickled the twine.
Paige Meyer (Fr, Beldenville) recorded the win for Stout, allowing the one goal and no saves. Robbie Shelby (So, La Crosse) recorded three saves in the first half. The Blazers' Megan Favorite had one save. St. Benedict outshot Stout overall, 11-4.
St. Benedict had a decided advantage in field position, recording 12 corner kicks to Stout's three, but the Blue Devil defense continually turned away Blazer opportunities.
Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m., then will host UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.
