Lyons Stretch Shutout Streak to Four, Blank Host Wellesley, 3-0
WELLESLEY, Mass.- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team stretched its shutout streak to four games with a 3-0 victory over host Wellesley College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The Lyons, who are ranked 19th in the country and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), also stayed unbeaten through eight games at 6-0-2 to go alongside their 2-0 league record. Wellesley fell to 4-3-1 and 1-1.
Sophomore Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) delivered her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 12th minute, which also stood up as the game-winner. Corigliano headed home a corner kick from classmate Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep).
Not even seven minutes later, Wheaton took advantage of another scoring opportunity off a corner, as freshman Tess Weyburne's (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) marker made the score 2-0.
Verde provided the Lyons with some extra insurance 5:59 into the second half. Taking a penalty kick following a Wellesley foul in the box, Verde's initial shot was turned aside by the Blue goalie, but her rebound found the back of the net to complete the game's scoring.
The hosts made a last-ditch effort to get on the board with four shots coming in the final 8:08, but Wheaton freshman goalie Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) was up to the task as she denied each attempt to preserve the shutout.
Hinton finished with four saves in 19:03, as she spelled classmate Taylor Wilson (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham), who was credited with three stops in 70:57. Wellesley sophomore goalie Claire Cerda (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) also had three saves.
Wheaton returns to Norton on Tuesday for the beginning of a four-game homestand against undefeated University of Massachusetts at Boston at 4:00 p.m.
