St. Mary's Women's Soccer Falls Short at Frostburg State
Frostburg, Md. – The Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer match between St. Mary's College of Maryland and host Frostburg State University came down to the last 10 minutes of the contest as three of the game's five goals were scored during that span. The Frostburg State Bobcats came out on top with a 3-2 decision to hand St. Mary's its first conference loss of the season.
Junior forward Adria Graham (Grantsville, Md.) broke a 1-1 draw at 80:28 as Graham finished off a feed from first-year midfielder Erin Worthman (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton), ending a five-minute span of peppering junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford). Wirtz saved three shots during that time before Graham slipped one in.
Graham struck again five minutes later with an unassisted tally to give Frostburg (7-2-1, 1-0-1 CAC) a 3-1 advantage with 4:33 remaining in regulation.
First-year forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) pulled St. Mary's (4-4-1, 1-1-1 CAC) within one as Konecke picked up her first collegiate goal at 89:00 with an unassisted score.
The Bobcats controlled the tempo of the match with a 22-8 shot advantage while St. Mary's edged the hosts with a 3-2 margin in corner kicks.
Wirtz denied a penalty kick attempt by sophomore forward Stephanie Fazenbaker (Frostburg, Md.) before junior midfielder Courtney Mack (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) put back Fazenbaker's rebound for the first goal of the contest at 13:18.
Frostburg held on to the 1-0 lead through halftime before sophomore Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./Madeira) netted the equalizer at 56:04 with her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Wirtz finished the match with nine saves while sophomore goalie Katie Smith (Reisterstown, Md.) tallied a pair in the FSU win.
