U of R Women's Soccer Edged by Cal Lutheran, 1-2
On a hot afternoon that reached triple digits, the University of Redlands women's soccer team came up short to the visiting Regals of Cal Lutheran University, 1-2, in an extremely competitive conference match. The loss moves the Bulldogs to .500 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and into a tie for fourth place.
The Bulldogs got off to the start that they wanted, scoring just two minutes into the game. Freshman midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) ran onto a ball in the Regal half of the field, took a couple of touches toward goal, and ripped one past the CLU goalkeeper into the right-side netting for the early 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, however, Cal Lutheran tied things up when senior forward Mayra Virgen (Port Hueneme, CA) broke through the oncoming defense just 10 yards from goal. She finished the opportunity, and just four minutes into the contest, the match was tied at one.
Both teams traded chances during the rest of the first half and the early part of second frame, but Cal Lutheran found the scoring touch once again in the 62nd minute. Sophomore forward Taylor Will (Santa Maria, CA) received the ball on the left side and hit a nicely placed shot into the upper right corner of the goal.
Trailing 1-2, Redlands pushed forward to create numerous scoring opportunities in the final minutes, but to no avail as the Bulldogs simply ran out of time.
The Maroon and Gray notched 15 total shots, with Laursen accounting for four of the attempts. Additionally, junior forward Lihini Weerasinghe(Redlands, CA) came off the bench and provided a spark for the Bulldogs by tallying three shots and creating multiple dangerous scoring chances for the Bulldogs.
Redlands (2-1-1, 1-1-0) hosts Chapman University in a first-time SCIAC match on Wednesday, September 19, at Farquhar Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
