Freshmen Lead Beavers to 3-0 Shutout Over John Jay
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The City College of New York women's soccer team (12-2) fired away 44 shots as freshmen Taylor Jo Gillen and reigning CUNYAC/Applebee's Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week Paola Ramos and junior Jessica Salas scored one goal apiece in a 3-0 shutout over John Jay College of Criminal Justice (4-12) in nonconference action on Wednesday afternoon at Purchase College Grass Field C.
The Beavers defense was on full display as City College allowed just four shots all game in its 10th shutout of the season and fifth consecutive shutout.
Gillen and Elif Demircan paced CCNY off of the bench as the freshman duo combined for one goal and two assists in the victory. Gillen's goal was the lone goal of the first period as a Demrican cross pass to the forward gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The goal was her third of the season and Demircan's fourth assist on the year.
Demircan posted her second assist of the contest in the 77th minute of the contest as Ramos connected with the back of the net, her fifth goal of the season, from 20 yards out to give CCNY a 2-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Salas picked up her third goal of the season to seal the victory as Ramos and senior Dzindzi Asamoah-Wade picked up their ninth and seventh assists on the year, respectively.
Goalkeeper Nicole Carroll posted her 10th shutout of the season and improved to 12-2 on the year.
The Beavers return to CUNYAC play on Saturday as CCNY heads to Staten Island to face Medgar Evers College at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex at 3 PM.
