Wheaton College women's soccer team blanks Millikin, 5-0
Wheaton, Ill., - The Wheaton College women's soccer team concluded the regular season on Friday with 5-0 victory against Millikin University (5-11-3/1-5-1) at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton is now 15-3-2 on the year and ends the CCIW schedule with a 5-1-1 record.
The Thunder will be the number-two seed in the upcoming CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton will host third-seeded Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday October 30 at 7 PM in a CCIW Tournament Semifinal. Top-seeded Augustana will host the tournament's other semifinal match on Wednesday October 31. The tournament's top remaining seed will host the CCIW Tournament Championship Match on Saturday November 3. The winner of the CCIW Tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament that begins the week of November 5.
Sophomore Sarah Guidera sparked Wheaton's scoring in today's win against Millikin with a goal in the 23rd minute. Guidera collected a ball that struck by junior Leah DeMoss and put it into the net to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Guidera increased Wheaton's lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute when she arced in a goal from just inside the six-yard box. Guidera registered a hat trick in the 40th minute when she netted her third goal of the night, off of an Ally Witt assist. Guidera's goal increased Wheaton's lead to 3-0, which would be the Wheaton lead at halftime.
Freshman Mary Pettit scored 14-seconds into the second half, off of an Alexa Sharkey assist to increase the Thunder lead to 4-0. Witt accounted for the 5-0 final score when she netted her 12th goal of the season off of an assist from Jen Lee.
Wheaton controlled the match with a 42-2 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge in corner kick attempts. Wheaton goalkeeper Kelsey Graham recorded her seventh shutout of the year, making two saves in the Thunder net. Millikin netminder Natalie Robertaccio made 17 saves and allowed five goals in 90 minutes for the Big Blue.
