Soccer Headed to USA South Semis

More news about: Meredith women's team

RALEIGH, N.C. - A 1-0 double-overtime victory over the Peidmont Lions places Meredith College in the semifinals of the USA South women's soccer tournament in Martinsville, Virginia, November 2. The Avenging Angels will face the winner of Sunday's quarterfinal round between Averett and Methodist.

Both teams battled to keep their seasons alive today under cloudy skies and cold, windy conditions at the Meredith Athletic Field. The Avenging Angels held a clear offensive advantage during the first 45 minutes of play out shooting the Lions 9-2. Three near misses to close out the period left Meredith fans ready for the second half.

Again, the Avenging Angels controlled the ball but could not close on the net. PC's starting keeper Marjorie Hammond grabbed three saves in the first stanza and teammate Michaela Gardner posted four during the final 45 minutes of regulation.

Scoreless at the buzzer, the teams prepared for the first 10 minute overtime period. The Meredith defense kept the ball away from the box and gave the frontline control. After three more attempts, the score remained tied at 0-0.

Once again, the teams prepared for OT battle. This time the Avenging Angels would not surrender. Leading scorer Jessie Davis settled a pass from Taylor Brown to sweep the ball past Gardner into the left corner of the net for the game-winning goal.

Senior Kimberly Williams returned to the field today and led all with five shots in the win. Annah Kane, Ila Torfin and Megan Luke held the line for the Avenging Angels, and junior goalie Kelsey Hopper was once again perfect in goal to record her 13th win on the season.

The Avenging Angels travel to Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Friday, Nov. 2, for a 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. matchup with the winner of tomorrow's Averett/Methodist pairing. Keep track of the USA South Women's Soccer Tournament here.
