Centre women move on to SAA Championship with 3-0 win over Millsaps
The Centre women's soccer team advanced to the first Southern Athletic Association championship game by cruising to a 3-0 victory over Millsaps in a conference semifinal game Saturday in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels scored just 10 minutes into the match when Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) played a ball up the right side to Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.), who beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. That score would prove to be enough for a defense that allowed just two shots and none on goal in posting its 13th shutout of the year.
Centre took that 1-0 lead to halftime before putting the game away with two second half goals. In the 61st minute, a pass from Mitchell found Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) in front of the goal for a second score. Becca Hinds (Austin, Texas) capped the scoring by collecting and scoring off a rebound with eight minutes to play.
Overall, Centre took 17 shots in the game, compared with the two for Millsaps. Megan Foley (Louisville, Ky.) and Holly Hilton (New Palestine, Ind.) split time in goal for Centre with neither having to make a save. Elise Davis made 10 saves in the loss for Millsaps.
Centre improves to 18-1 on the season with the win while Millsaps finishes the year with an 8-10-1 record. The Colonels will take on Rhodes at noon on Sunday for the SAA Championship. Rhodes was a 3-2 winner over Birmingham-Southern in Saturday's second semifinal.
