Owings Mills, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team and William Paterson University played to a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the Stevenson University Classic Saturday afternoon.
The 1-1 tie held through two 10-minute overtime periods as William Paterson's two shots taken during the extra 20 minutes were off the mark, going wide and high.
St. Mary's (1-0-2) will take on No. 13 The College of New Jersey tomorrow at 3:00 pm in the final day of the Stevenson Classic.
Following a scoreless first half, WPU (1-1-1) struck first in the second stanza as sophomore midfielder Elena Grady (Washington Township, N.J.) headed in senior defender Nicole Sullivan's (Jackson, N.J.) free kick at 60:54.
Senior captain Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) evened up the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at 82:21 as Rambo took advantage of senior goalkeeper Mary Jane Seiler (Robbinsville, N.J.) dropping the ball following a St. Mary's free kick.
The Pioneers' first-year defender Meagan Collins (Long Beach, N.J.) tried to give her team a 2-1 lead but first-year keeper Sara Eaton (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) was up to the challenge and denied Collins' shot at the game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
St. Mary's had its own opportunity to win the game in regulation in the 86th minute but sophomore forward Jess Konecke's (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) shot from the top of the box hit the post. The Pioneers took one more crack at winning it before OT but Sullivan's shot went wide, sending the game into extra frames.
