Manchester women complete unbeaten week
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Andy Stout couldn't have scripted a better week.
The Manchester University women's soccer coach saw the Spartans rattle off three wins, including back-to-back shutouts, to move their record to 3-1-1. A 2-0 victory over Ohio Athletic Conference member Muskingum University closed the stretch and the 2013 Anderson University – Manchester University Raven-Spartan Classic.
"It's been about getting our intensity going earlier in matches," he said. "We were a little slow starting against Trine and, at times, this afternoon. Overall though, it's been an extremely positive week."
Stretching their unbeaten string to four Sunday, Sept. 7, the home side kept offensive pressure on their guests throughout. MU held a 28-13 overall shots advantage on Muskingum which included a 10-8 shots on goal advantage.
Junior midfielder Sofie Tzortzinis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) broke up a scoreless tie in the 13th minute, weaving her way through the Muskies' defense and hitting a shot into the left side of the net. Junior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) gave the Spartans' added breathing room in the 74th minute, taking a pass from Tzortzinis on a three-on-two in front of Muskingum's net and depositing it into the right side. Barta, Tzortzinis and junior forward Breanna McLane (Westville, Ind.) each fired off five shot attempts.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) and a stingy MU defense were the benefactors. Willmann, involved in her 18th career either combined or individual shutout, saved eight visiting attacks on goal.
Manchester University takes to the road for an in-state clash at Goshen College Wednesday, Sept. 11. Match time at the GC soccer complex is 7 p.m.
NOTES: Barta concluded a dazzling week statistically. With two-goal matches against Trine and Kentucky Christian added to her effort against Muskingum, she wound up with 14 points in the three contests. "I knew this was possible (with Katelyn)," Stout said. "She has the ability to produce those numbers. It also goes back to our offense working together really well." . … The junior is just two goals and five points shy of equaling her 2012 season totals.
