St. Mary's Women's Soccer Falls 3-1 to No. 13 TCNJ
Owings Mills, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 13 The College of New Jersey Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Stevenson University Classic. Sophomore forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) netted the Seahawks' lone goal.
St. Mary's (1-1-2) sees its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end as TCNJ (4-0) outshot the Seahawks 22-4 and owned a 13-0 margin in corner kicks for the game.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 11th when St. Mary's travels to Galloway, New Jersey to face its fourth New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent in five games, taking on host Richard Stockton College at 4:00 pm.
TCNJ struck quickly as the Lions got on the scoreboard just 26 seconds in behind senior forward Katie Lindacher's (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) second goal of the season.
St. Mary's regrouped and evened the match just over 10 minutes later as senior captain Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) sent in a through ball and Konecke one-timed into the right corner.
TCNJ staked a 2-1 advantage just 14 seconds before halftime as first-year midfielder Lauren Malajian (Haworth, N.J.) tallied an unassisted goal from outside six yards.
First-year goalkeeper Sara Eaton (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) and the Seahawk defense held the Lions scoreless for the next 40 minutes despite facing 13 shots and 10 corner kicks in the second half. Senior midfielder Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, N.J.) snuck a third goal past St. Mary's at 84:23, one-timing a free kick by junior defender Jordan Downs (Brick, N.J.).
Eaton finished with a season-best eight stops while senior Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, N.J.) made two saves in preserving TCNJ's undefeated record.
